A large chalkboard filled with neatly drawn, colorful philosophical symbols: a branching thought bubble, a stylized question mark made of stars, a simple maze, and a balanced scale. Bright pastel chalk diagrams of logic trees and speech bubbles radiate from a central phrase, “Ask Big Questions!” in bold, handwritten letters. A wooden chalk ledge holds stubby, dust-covered chalk pieces and a soft eraser. Overhead classroom lighting mixes with diffused daylight from an unseen window, producing a clear, evenly lit photographic scene. Shot from a slightly angled, medium-distance perspective with sharp focus throughout, the mood is playful, energetic, and intellectually stimulating, evoking an imaginative middle school learning environment without any people present.

Philosophy Camp

A weeklong summer camp at JMU where middle school students explore life’s biggest questions together.

About

JMU Philosophy Summer Camp invites curious middle schoolers to ask big questions, practice respectful debate, and explore ideas about justice, identity, knowledge, and happiness through games, discussions, campus adventures, and creative projects.

A round, light maple classroom table covered with philosophical activity materials: a colorful set of question cards with icons like tiny brains, lightbulbs, and scales; a clear jar filled with folded paper prompts labeled “BIG QUESTIONS”; and a bright yellow notebook open to a page titled “What Makes Something Fair?” in neat handwriting. Beside it lies a shiny purple pen and a small rubber brain-shaped eraser. Soft morning sunlight streams through an unseen window, creating gentle highlights on the tabletop and soft shadows around the jar. Photographic realism, captured from a slightly elevated angle with shallow depth of field, keeps the jar and notebook in sharp focus while blurring a cozy, book-filled classroom background. The atmosphere is warm, curious, and playful.
An inviting JMU campus scene featuring a stone building with the iconic red roof in soft focus in the background, while the foreground showcases a picnic blanket spread on the grass. On the blanket rests an open notebook filled with colorful doodles of question marks, puzzle pieces, and speech bubbles, alongside a stack of philosophy-themed flashcards and a clear water bottle with a JMU-purple lid. Early summer golden-hour sunlight bathes the scene, casting long, soft shadows and creating a warm, nostalgic glow. Photographic realism, shot from a low, close-up angle with the notebook in sharp focus and the campus gently blurred behind. The mood is playful, optimistic, and intellectually adventurous, evoking a summer camp feel without showing any people.

What We Explore Together

Each day centers on a theme—identity, ethics, knowledge, and community—with activities linking to reading, writing, and critical-thinking skills that support middle school standards while tackling questions like “What is fair?” and “How do we know?”

A bright, organized classroom corner dedicated to a philosophy summer camp, photographed without any people. A cork bulletin board displays colorful index cards pinned in a branching “tree of questions” pattern, with topics like “Friendship,” “Truth,” and “Justice” written in playful marker fonts. Below, a low white shelf holds bins labeled “Logic Games,” “Big Ideas,” and “Thought Experiments,” alongside a small globe and a quirky ceramic owl. Natural afternoon light filters through blinds, creating soft streaks of light across the bulletin board and gentle shadows along the shelf. Photographic realism, captured from a three-quarter angle with moderate depth of field, keeps the question tree in clear focus. The mood is energetic, curious, and welcoming, perfect for showing a middle school-friendly philosophy space.
